I like to work in mixed media—including but not limited to oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache, charcoal, ink, and pastel. I work on both canvas and paper, and anything else that happens to be at hand. Drawing is my first love, and I often incorporate drawing into my paintings. Having said all that, I really don’t like to rule anything out! I often work on many artworks at the same time, moving back and forth between works as I am inspired or as I wait for elements to dry.
I love lines, how they wander, their simplicity, and how they can often express something very complex in a single mark. I try to keep my lines loose, favouring spontaneity over reality. I love to start with abstract, sometimes accidental, shapes, washes, and textures. From there I work on layering to add some structure, to change or move things around to resolve visual problems, and to add detail.
My art is inspired by what is immediately around me including where I’ve lived, places I’ve visited, and scenes from everyday life. I work from a studio where I live in the beautiful Hunter Valley region of NSW, Australia, with my husband and our two girls. I grew up travelling around a fair bit, developing a nomadic spirit along with an appreciation of different cultures and landscapes—from remote rural spaces to busy urban areas. I have a degree in Visual Arts.
